Bet
what it means
A one-word yes. Depending on tone it can also be a challenge, closer to "we'll see about that", which is how it started out.
Agreement or confirmation — roughly "okay", "deal", or "sure thing".
the origin story
African American Vernacular English, originally short for "you bet" or an invitation to wager. In use since at least the 1990s, long before the internet spread it.
Its default meaning drifted from challenge to simple agreement as it spread beyond its original speakers, which is why "bet" can read as either "sounds good" or "try me" depending entirely on delivery. Both senses are still active.

Bet.
Oh no.
how to use it
- Confirming plans quickly in a text or DM
- Accepting a challenge with confidence
- Any casual context where a one-word yes is enough
- In writing where a clear "yes, confirmed" avoids ambiguity
- Replying to something serious, where it can read as dismissive
- With someone who will read it as sarcasm
