Brainrot
what it means
Both a description of short-form video culture and a name for the vocabulary it produces. Brainrot words are deliberately nonsensical; the absurdity is the point, not a side effect.
Content so repetitive and low-substance it feels like it's degrading your brain — and the slang that comes out of it.
the origin story
Used online since the 2000s for obsessive fixation, then narrowed around 2023-2024 to describe short-form video overconsumption and its language.
Oxford named "brain rot" its 2024 Word of the Year, citing a huge rise in usage. It's used self-deprecatingly as often as critically — people describe their own feeds as brainrot while continuing to scroll, which is the joke.
