The scale ranges enormously — from a friend group joking that someone is cancelled for a bad opinion, to genuine career consequences. That range is why the word is so contested.

the origin story
Grew out of Black Twitter usage in the mid-2010s, drawing on a line from the film New Jack City about cancelling a relationship.
It started as a joke about withdrawing personal attention and became the centre of a huge cultural argument about accountability versus mob justice. Its original playful sense survives — people still cancel their friends over minor things — but the serious sense dominates media coverage.
