Emerged on imageboards around 2016-2021, formalised in a widely-shared forum post arguing the internet "died" around 2016.
It was treated as fringe until large language models made bulk content generation trivial, at which point mainstream outlets began covering it seriously as a description of a real trend rather than a conspiracy. The original version — that this was deliberate — remains unsupported.
