Delulu
what it means
A softened, affectionate version of "delusional". Being delulu is treated as a strategy rather than a flaw: "delulu is the solulu" frames self-belief as the thing that makes long shots work.
Playfully delusional — believing something unrealistic about yourself or a crush, usually on purpose.
the origin story
Coined in K-pop fandom around 2014 for fans convinced they would end up with an idol, then broke into mainstream TikTok in 2023.
The mainstream turn changed its meaning. In fandom it was mildly insulting; on TikTok it became self-applied and aspirational, attached to career manifesting and dating optimism. Dictionary.com added it in 2024 and it was shortlisted for several words of the year.
in the wild
He liked my story so I think we're basically together.
Girl. Delulu.
Delulu is the solulu.
I have none of the qualifications but I applied anyway.
Going full delulu, respect.
how to use it
- Teasing a friend for reading too much into a small signal
- Describing your own optimism about something unlikely
- Captioning manifesting, hopeful or wishful-thinking content
- About someone genuinely struggling with their grip on reality — it trivialises it
- As a real insult, since the tone is meant to be warm
- In formal writing, where "unrealistic" says it without the baggage
