Gank
what it means
Standard tactics in MOBAs, where ganking is a core part of the jungle role. In other games it's often considered unsporting.
Ambushing an opponent with a numbers advantage, usually by surprise.
the origin story
Probably from "gang kill", used in MMOs and MOBAs from the early 2000s.
Whether it's legitimate depends entirely on the game — in League of Legends it's a designed strategy, in open-world PvP it's often seen as griefing. The word carries no judgement itself; the context supplies it.
