Grind
what it means
The grind is deliberately tedious by design — it's how games extend playtime. "Grinding" also transferred wholesale to describe repetitive work outside games.
Repetitive gameplay done to accumulate progress, currency or items.
the origin story
MMO vocabulary from the late 1990s and early 2000s, describing repeated combat for experience points.
It gave a name to a core mechanic of live-service game design, and the criticism embedded in the word never left — calling something "a grind" is rarely a compliment. Its migration into work vocabulary, via "the grind" and "grindset", carried the same ambivalence.
