Headcanon
what it means
Not a claim about the text — a claim about your own reading of it. "My headcanon is that he can't cook" is offered as personal, not as an argument.
A personal belief about a character that isn't established in the source material.
the origin story
Fandom vocabulary from around 2008-2010, formalising a distinction fans had always made informally.
It's a genuinely useful concept, giving fans a way to share interpretations without claiming authority over the text. Widely-shared headcanons sometimes become "fanon" — accepted across a fandom despite never appearing in the source.
in the wild
My headcanon is that she's terrible at directions.
That tracks completely.
Everyone writes him as allergic to cats.
It's never been mentioned once.
how to use it
- Sharing a personal interpretation of a character
- Fandom conversations
- Discussing fan interpretation
- As a factual claim about the source
- Professionally without context
- To argue with people about what's canon
