Log Off
what it means
Gentler than "touch grass" and often sincere. "Everyone log off" is a standard response to a day when the whole platform is arguing about something pointless.
An instruction to stop engaging with the internet, usually for your own good.
the origin story
Old computing vocabulary, repurposed as an internet-culture instruction through Twitter in the 2010s.
It became a collective phrase as much as an individual one — "the website is bad today, log off" acknowledges that some days a platform is simply not worth being on. The advice is usually good and rarely followed.
in the wild
Everyone is arguing about a sandwich.
Log off. Genuinely.
I've read the same argument nine times.
Time to log off.
how to use it
- Suggesting a break from a platform
- Reacting to pointless discourse
- Casual conversation
- To silence someone raising something important
- Professionally
- As a dismissal in a real argument
