Pick Me
what it means
"I'm not like other girls" is the canonical form. The accusation is about performing difference to win favour, usually from men.
Someone who seeks approval by putting down others of their own group.
the origin story
Spread through Black Twitter around 2016 with the #TweetLikeAPickMe hashtag, and became widespread on TikTok afterwards.
It named a recognisable pattern but became heavily overused, applied to any woman expressing an unpopular opinion. That overuse drew criticism that the term itself polices women's behaviour, which is roughly the thing it was coined to describe.
