Task Masking
what it means
Walking purposefully, typing loudly, keeping the right tabs open. It's a response to presenteeism — being measured on visible activity rather than output.
Performing visible busyness rather than actually working.
the origin story
Named around 2024-2025 as return-to-office mandates increased visible-presence pressure.
It emerged directly from the return-to-office debate, where employees required to be present without a corresponding increase in work responded by performing the appearance of it. Commentators framed it as a symptom of measuring the wrong things rather than a worker failing.
