what it means
The other half of "no cap". Used as a noun ("that's cap"), a verb ("stop capping") and an emoji (🧢). One word is enough to accuse someone of exaggerating.
A lie, or the act of lying. Calling "cap" means calling someone out.
the origin story
African American Vernacular English, where "capping" for boasting or lying dates back decades. It reached mainstream internet use through Atlanta hip-hop in the late 2010s.
The blue cap emoji made it enormously portable: a single 🧢 in a quote tweet is a full accusation. TikTok comment sections adopted it as the default response to an unbelievable story, alongside "this ain't it" and "be so for real".

how to use it
- Calling out an exaggerated story among friends
- Reacting to online content that looks staged or faked
- As a one-word reply where "that's not true" would be too heavy
- In a serious accusation — it is too light for a real allegation
- With people who will read it as a genuine insult
- In writing where the reader might think you mean a hat
