what it means
"Cap" means a lie, so "no cap" means no lie. It works as emphasis at the start or end of a sentence, roughly where an older speaker would say "honestly" or "I swear".
No lie — a way of insisting that what you just said is completely true.
the origin story
African American Vernacular English, where "capping" has meant boasting or lying since at least the mid-20th century. Southern hip-hop, especially Atlanta rap, carried it into wide use in the late 2010s.
The 2018 Young Thug and Future track "No Cap" pushed it well past rap audiences. The blue cap emoji became its shorthand on Twitter and TikTok, so a single 🧢 in a reply now calls someone a liar without a word of text.
