Cheugy
what it means
Not old enough to be retro and not current enough to be cool. Live Laugh Love signs, side parts and "adulting" were the canonical examples.
Out of date in an earnest, trying-too-hard way — especially millennial trends worn past their moment.
the origin story
Coined around 2013 by Gaby Rasson, a Beverly Hills high school student, and popularised by a 2021 New York Times article.
It went viral for roughly a season and was mostly dead within a year, partly because it was used to bully millennials over harmless preferences. Its short life became a case study in slang that spreads through media coverage rather than organic use.

Deeply cheugy.
Does anyone still say cheugy?
No, saying cheugy is cheugy now.
how to use it
- Discussing 2021 internet history
- Ironically, about your own outdated tastes
- Writing about trend cycles
- Sincerely — the word itself is now dated
- To mock people for harmless preferences
- As current slang, which will date you immediately
