Mid
what it means
The most efficient insult in current slang, because it denies something the dignity of being controversial. Calling a film mid is worse than calling it terrible.
Mediocre — not bad enough to hate, not good enough to praise.
the origin story
Wrestling and hip-hop circles used it for middling talent in the 2010s. It spread through gaming and stan Twitter around 2021.
Its power comes from being unarguable — there is no impressive way to defend something called mid. It generated "mid" tier lists, the "you're just calling everything mid" backlash, and "aggressively mid" for things that are somehow boring on purpose.
in the wild
So what did you think?
Honestly? Mid.
That's harsher than saying it was bad.
This album is a masterpiece.
It's mid and you know it.
how to use it
- Dismissing something overhyped without writing a full critique
- Ranking things — tier lists, food, films, albums
- Casual disagreement with a friend's enthusiasm
- About someone's personal work when they are looking for real feedback
- In a review that needs to explain itself
- About people's appearance — it lands as cruel rather than clever
