Borrowed from Twitch, where viewers can clip recent moments. It's now used in person, where there is obviously no stream to clip.
A request to save the last few seconds of a livestream because something notable just happened.
the origin story
From Twitch's clipping feature, introduced in 2016; the phrase spread beyond streaming from around 2020.
It's part of the same drift as "chat" and "mods" entering everyday speech. Saying "clip that" after a good line in a real conversation is a running joke about how thoroughly streaming vocabulary has spread.
