-Core (Suffix)
what it means
Attach "-core" to almost any noun and you've named an aesthetic. The suffix turned taste into a taxonomy, and the taxonomy became a content genre.
A suffix marking any theme as a whole aesthetic — cottagecore, gorpcore, balletcore.
the origin story
Descends from "hardcore" via 2010s Tumblr coinages like "normcore", then exploded across Tumblr and TikTok from 2019 onward.
Its productivity is extraordinary — new -cores appear weekly and most vanish just as fast. Fashion journalists began openly complaining about the churn around 2023, arguing the suffix had turned trend-spotting into naming things faster than anyone could adopt them.
in the wild
What would you call this?
Some kind of librarian-core. It's a whole thing.

- In serious fashion criticism, where it's imprecise
