Normcore
what it means
Fashion as refusal. Normcore's premise was that opting out of visible style signalling was itself a style choice, which is either clever or a joke depending on who you ask.
Deliberately unremarkable clothing — plain trainers, unbranded fleeces, ordinary jeans.
the origin story
Coined by trend forecasting group K-Hole in a 2013 report, then picked up widely by fashion media in 2014.
It's the origin point of the whole "-core" suffix explosion, which is a considerable legacy for a term that was arguably half satire in the original report. The gap between K-Hole's concept and the media version — which reduced it to "dad clothes" — is a well-documented case of a trend being misread into existence.
in the wild
Plain white trainers, grey sweatshirt, no branding.
Normcore.
Wasn't it originally a joke?
It was originally a much stranger idea than dad clothes.
how to use it
- Describing deliberately plain style
- Discussing the history of the -core suffix
- Fashion conversations
- As current fashion vocabulary — it peaked in 2014
- Professionally without context
- Without noting the gap between the concept and its media version
