Core Memory
what it means
Borrowed from the film Inside Out, where core memories literally build personality. Online it's applied to a specific childhood snack or a school assembly, mostly as a joke.
A formative memory that shapes who you are — usually invoked about something trivial.
the origin story
From Pixar's Inside Out (2015); the phrase spread as internet vocabulary through TikTok around 2021-2022.
"Core memory unlocked" became the standard caption for nostalgia content, particularly for very specific millennial and Gen Z childhood objects. Psychologists have pointed out that the concept isn't how memory actually works, which has not slowed its use at all.
