Dark Academia
what it means
Romanticises university life as it appears in gothic fiction rather than as it actually is. Tweed, Latin, and a great deal of atmospheric lighting.
An aesthetic of old libraries, tweed, candlelight, classical literature and autumn.
the origin story
Emerged on Tumblr around 2015 and became a major TikTok aesthetic in 2020, drawing heavily on Donna Tartt's novel The Secret History.
Its 2020 surge came when actual campuses were closed, which made the fantasy of a candlelit seminar particularly appealing. Critics noted the aesthetic centres almost entirely on European and North American elite institutions, and "light academia" emerged as a softer, brighter counterpart.
in the wild
Tweed blazer, a stack of Greek tragedies, terrible lighting.
Dark academia.
Nobody's actually reading Herodotus by candlelight.
That's not the point of it.
how to use it
- Describing scholarly, gothic-toned aesthetics
- Fashion and interiors conversations
- Discussing 2020 internet culture
- As a description of real academic life
- Professionally without context
- Without noting how narrow its cultural references are
