Finna
what it means
Marks an immediate intention: "I'm finna leave" means leaving now, not later. It is a real grammatical feature of AAVE, not an internet invention.
Going to, about to — a contraction of "fixing to".
the origin story
African American Vernacular English and Southern American English, contracted from "fixing to". Documented well before the internet existed.
It spread online through Twitter and rap lyrics, and is one of the more frequently misused borrowings — it marks near-future intent specifically, so "finna go next year" is grammatically wrong to native speakers of the dialect.
in the wild
I'm finna head out, early start tomorrow.
Alright, text me when you're home.
Finna order food, anyone want anything?
Get me whatever you're getting.
how to use it
- Casual speech and texting about something you are about to do
- Where "about to" would fit naturally
- Contexts where the dialect is familiar to everyone involved
- For distant future plans — it means immediately
- In formal writing
- Performatively, as a costume; it is a living dialect feature, not a costume
