The phrase appeared in a 2009 tweet but went viral in 2022 via a fabricated news headline that spread widely before being debunked.
Oxford named it Word of the Year for 2022 in its first public vote, where it won by a large margin. Its appeal was read as a direct reaction against the curated perfection of lockdown-era lifestyle content.
