what it means
Used to state something without hedging: "highkey the best album this year" means you are willing to defend it. It exists mostly because "lowkey" needed an opposite.
Openly, obviously, very — the opposite of lowkey.
the origin story
A back-formation from "lowkey", which comes from AAVE. It appeared online in the mid-2010s once "lowkey" was common enough to need a counterpart.
It never got as popular as lowkey, largely because English already has plenty of ways to say "very". It survives mainly in contrast — someone says lowkey, someone else corrects them to highkey.
