the origin story
African American Vernacular English, from the older sense of keeping something "low key" or discreet. Widespread online from the mid-2010s.
It pairs with "highkey" as an intensity scale, and often does the opposite of hedging — "lowkey the best thing I've eaten all year" is not a small claim. That gap between the hedge and the statement is the joke people lean on.
