POV
what it means
"POV: you're the last person awake at the party." Grammatically it's often used wrongly, but the convention is now firmly established.
Point Of View — a video format that puts the viewer inside a scenario.
the origin story
A film and gaming term; the caption convention spread on TikTok from around 2019.
Purists objected loudly that most "POV" videos aren't from the viewer's point of view at all — they're scenarios described in second person. The objection lost completely; the loose usage is now standard and nobody is confused by it.
in the wild
POV: your flatmate has been on a call since 7am.
This is a documentary.
That's not actually a POV.
Nobody has cared about that since 2020.
how to use it
- Framing a relatable scenario in a caption
- Short-form video contexts
- Casual social media use
- In film or technical contexts, where it means something specific
- Professionally
- Where second-person framing would be confusing
