Rizz
what it means
Short for "charisma". Rizz is the flirting skill itself, not the outcome — you can have rizz and still get rejected, and someone can be attractive with no rizz at all.
Charisma, specifically the ability to attract a romantic or sexual partner through conversation.
the origin story
Popularised by streamer Kai Cenat and his friends on Twitch around 2021, as a clipped form of "charisma". It spread from his streams to TikTok within a year.
TikTok turned it into a whole grammar in 2022-2023: "unspoken rizz" (attraction with no words), "W rizz" and "L rizz" (successful and failed attempts), and "rizz up" as a verb. Oxford University Press named it Word of the Year in 2023, which is usually the point at which a term starts sounding dated to the people who coined it.
in the wild
He got her number in like four minutes.
Yeah that boy has unlimited rizz, it's not fair.
I said "you too" when the waiter said enjoy your meal.
Negative rizz. Zero. Below zero.
how to use it
- Complimenting someone's smooth, confident way of flirting
- Joking about your own social awkwardness ("L rizz", "no rizz")
- Casual conversation with friends, group chats and comment sections
- In professional writing — it reads as trying too hard
- About a stranger's appearance, since rizz describes behaviour, not looks
- Around people who use it earnestly if you mean it as mockery — the sarcasm rarely lands
