Originated on forums and imageboards in the late 2000s; the term became widely used from around 2014.
It matured from a pejorative for derailing threads into a recognised comedic style with its own conventions. Brand accounts adopting it in the 2020s marked the point at which it stopped being a subculture and became a strategy.
