the origin story
Popularised by Tumblr and Twitter accounts from 2015 that collected disquieting photographs.
It generated an opposite category, "blessed images", and influenced a whole aesthetic of deliberately low-quality, uncanny visuals. The genre overlaps with liminal spaces and the wider fascination with images that feel subtly incorrect.
