Sigma
what it means
Invented as a rank above the "alpha male" hierarchy, and mocked almost immediately. Among younger users it's now used almost entirely as a joke.
A lone-wolf archetype — successful and confident without needing social status or approval.
the origin story
Coined in a 2010 article by writer Theodore Robert Beale as an addition to the pseudo-scientific alpha/beta hierarchy; spread on TikTok from 2021.
"Sigma male grindset" edits — dramatic slow-motion clips with motivational captions — turned it into a parody genre. Gen Alpha adopted "sigma" as generic praise, largely stripped of the original ideology, which is how most younger users encounter it.
in the wild
He ate lunch alone and left without saying goodbye.
Sigma.
That goal was sigma.
That's not what sigma means.
It is now.
how to use it
- Ironically praising antisocial-but-confident behaviour
- Discussing internet masculinity discourse
- Joking with people who know it's a parody
- Sincerely, as a self-description
- Without awareness of the ideology behind the alpha/sigma framing
- Professionally
