Borrowed from product-launch vocabulary; became standard dating usage on Instagram around 2021-2022.
It exists because publicly announcing a relationship is high-stakes — a hard launch has to be undone if things end. The soft launch is a hedge, and reading them has become a genuine social skill among friend groups.
