Sus
what it means
Short for suspicious. It can be a genuine warning or a light accusation, and it applies to people, links, stories and situations equally.
Suspicious or suspect — someone or something that seems off.
the origin story
British slang for "suspect" going back decades, but the current wave came from the 2020 surge of the game Among Us, where players accuse each other of being sus.
Among Us turned it into one of the fastest-spreading words of the pandemic, complete with the red crewmate as a visual shorthand. The gaming association faded but the word stayed, and it now works in any context where something feels wrong.
in the wild
Some account just DM'd me a link about a refund.
That's sus, don't open it.
He said he was busy then posted from the same bar.
Extremely sus.
how to use it
- Flagging something that looks like a scam or a lie
- Playfully accusing a friend of hiding something
- Quick reactions in chats, comments and games
- In a serious accusation, where it sounds flippant
- In professional communication about actual security concerns
- As a joke about someone's identity — it has been used that way and it does not land well
