Spread through therapy-influenced online vocabulary and Twitter in the late 2010s, from the psychological sense of validating feelings.
It came from a wave of therapy language entering casual speech, alongside "boundaries" and "holding space". The object sense — calling a sandwich valid — developed later and is mostly a joke about the drift.
