A catch-all for mood that deliberately avoids explaining itself. "The vibes were off" is a complete verdict — nobody is expected to justify it further.

the origin story
From "vibrations" in 1960s counterculture, revived heavily online in the late 2010s as a way to talk about mood without analysis.
The revival produced a whole family: "vibe check", "immaculate vibes", "vibe shift", "no thoughts just vibes". Its usefulness is that it treats an intuition as sufficient evidence, which is also the main criticism of it.
