Liminal Space
what it means
Places designed to be passed through, captured with nobody passing through them. The emptiness is what makes them unsettling.
A transitional place photographed empty — corridors, stairwells, car parks, waiting rooms.
the origin story
The architectural and anthropological term was adopted by internet aesthetics communities around 2019, spreading through Reddit and Twitter.
The concept comes from anthropologist Victor Turner's work on liminality, though almost nobody using it online encountered it there. Its internet form drove the Backrooms and weirdcore, and empty-mall photography became a recognisable genre in its own right.
in the wild

Perfect liminal space.
Why is an empty McDonald's unsettling?
Because it's built for crowds and there aren't any.
