Indie Sleaze
what it means
The opposite of curated. Indie sleaze is deliberately unflattering, overexposed and slightly grubby, which is precisely why it appealed after a decade of polish.
A revival of late-2000s party aesthetics — harsh flash photography, American Apparel, messy eyeliner, disposable cameras.
the origin story
Named around 2021 by fashion commentators anticipating a revival of 2006-2012 party culture aesthetics.
It was unusual in being announced as a trend before it fully arrived — commentators predicted the revival, then it partially happened. Its appeal was read as a reaction to the extreme curation of Instagram's 2010s, and to the return of flash photography as an aesthetic choice.

Indie sleaze. It's deliberate.
Nobody's editing anything any more.
Ten years of facetune will do that.

- Professionally without context
