the origin story
Emerged on Tumblr and Reddit around 2019-2020, closely related to dreamcore and liminal space imagery.
It grew alongside the Backrooms and the wider fascination with liminal spaces, all drawing on the same unsettling quality of empty, poorly-lit, vaguely familiar places. The deliberately low image quality is essential — cleaning it up destroys the effect entirely.
